If you’re a busy police, fire, ambulance or S.E.S professional, check out these seven podcasts for emergency service workers to make the most of your down time.
Our parents had the radio. In the digital age, we have podcasts. By definition, a podcast is a digital audio file available (somewhere) on the internet, and is generally available to download to either your computer or a mobile device. Typically available as either a series or via installments, audiences can subscribe to their desired podcast channel and get notifications when a new file or “episode” is released.
Like most things, your podcast preference is generally linked to your interests or lifestyle – Joe Rogan is the “go to” for some, while for others it might be true crime or even current affairs. However, if you’re specifically on the hunt for podcasts for emergency service workers, the good news is that we’ve already done the research for you.
Try These Podcasts For Emergency Service Workers
Whether you’re driving home from another massive day or just pottering around the kitchen, listening to podcasts is rapidly becoming one of the most popular ways to unwind – but it’s about far more than just white noise.
In fact, a 2016 study conducted out of UC Berkeley concluded that listening to narrative stories – such as podcasts – can stimulate multiple parts of your brain, and can even release oxytocin, or the “love hormone”. If you haven’t yet jumped on the bandwagon, which podcasts for emergency service workers should you try first?
I Am 000 – Produced by Victoria’s 000 service, the Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority (ESTA), “I Am 000” tells the stories of real life triple zero calls, and the people behind them. Listeners hear the tales of both callers, patients, phone line operators and emergency services, as they share their experiences and memories of each case.
Policing Australia – Recognised as the official podcast of the Australian Policing Journal (APJ), this non for profit monthly series dives deep into issues and topics that relate directly to Australia’s police force. Hosted by Jason Byrnes, “Policing Australia” dissects new APJ articles, future initiatives, true crime, and even interviews notable figures linked to the police community.
Distinction – Released in late 2020, “Distinction” is a true crime series like no other. As a four part podcast series that explores tales of courage from inside Victoria Police, the podcast tackles real world events that include armed robberies, PTSD, and the many sacrifices made by both serving police force members and their families.
Talking Trauma – Produced on behalf of the Department of Health and Human Services and in collaboration with the Victorian State Trauma committee, “Talking Trauma” puts the focus on all healthcare clinicians caring for major trauma patients in Victoria. This miniseries primarily interviews a wide variety of guests sourced from all corners of the trauma workplace.
Inside EMS – Although it’s an American podcast, “Inside EMS” has been around for over seven years and is regarded as one of the pioneers in the podcasting game for those working in the emergency medical services. Hosts Chris Cebollero and Kelly Grayson bring expert perspective to hot topics, clinical issues, operations and lessons on leadership.
After The Call – Founded by two brothers, Heavy Lies The Helmet is comprised of industry leaders still actively working in the fields of pre-hospital critical care, and search and rescue. “After The Call” is their widely praised podcast, which openly discusses the world of resuscitation and aviation – and the pressures that come with it.
